Senior Play Evokes Classic Hollywood

Senior Play Evokes Classic Hollywood

RC Theatre Company Seniors performed Steven Fechters's The Last Cigarette on February 23 and 24 in Suna Kıraç Theatre. In Fechter's modern tribute to the golden era of Hollywood and film Noir, a glamorous but fatigued woman named Angela (Elif Babaoğlu) sits by herself in the last smoking bar in California, dreaming away the day, while Howard (Kaan Ertaş) watches on. He eventually takes his chances and sits next to her, hoping to connect through flattery and odd personal anecdotes. Angela makes it hard, waiting nearly fifteen minutes before even making eye contact with Howard. Ultimately, she lets him in but upon learning she has cancer, Howard backs away in a dramatic finish.

Babaoğlu, so economic with her gestures and sultry with her speech, summoned the spirits of famous Hollywood stars like Lauren Bacall and Gloria Swanson, and yet played to the complexity of Angela's character. Ertaş played Howard as carefree and quirky, never letting the audience be comfortable in identifying his motives.
