Rationale for RC’s Integration of Technology and Learning
The goal of education at Robert College is to produce individuals articulate in at least two languages who work to high standards in all subject areas, value responsibility, live with integrity, and strive to maintain balance in their own lives. Thus, education at Robert College is about teaching students, not subjects. It is about engaging students in their own learning, capitalizing on the talents and motivation that each individual brings to the school, helping to ensure that their creativity and critical thinking skills are developed fully.
Education in the 21st Century has been changing dramatically. Technology has altered the way students communicate among themselves, with teachers, with the broader community, and with the world. It has transformed from being used in schools only for administrative purposes to being used explicitly for learning both within and outside of schools. Learning has been evolving towards integrating technology to make students’ education even more engaging and authentic. The meaning of literacy is changing into one that encompasses both information and digital literacy. It is becoming paramount for all members of a community to understand human, cultural and societal issues related to technology, and to practice safe, legal and responsible use of information and technology. As role models and mentors for their students, it is essential that teachers exemplify a 21st Century learning mindset as they collaborate among themselves and with their students.
Given this new understanding of technology and 21st Century skills, it is crucial that all adult members of our community, including parents, administrators, teachers, staff and alumni, understand the power of technology and the power of their roles in furthering our students’ education and are actively engaged in it. Through the advent of technology and a furthering of 21st Century skills, we can move our students into new realms of thinking, better equipped to face the world of the present and ready to lead the world of the future.
Robert College’s Vision for the Integration of Technology and Learning
In order to support learning in the 21st Century, we envision a Robert College community whose members are purposefully engaged in ongoing learning supported by the use of integrated technology. Members model citizenship, leadership, critical thinking, creativity, global awareness, communication, and collaboration. This culture empowers learners through a rigorous and relevant program enhanced by current and emerging technologies, and fosters responsible, ethical use of digital resources and tools.
The following belief statements will help guide the realization of this vision:
A responsible learning community is dedicated to modeling and facilitating a clear understanding of the social, ethical, and legal issues and responsibilities related to our evolving digital culture.
Students can thrive when lifelong learning and collaboration in an increasingly digital world are effectively modeled by all members of the RC community.
We believe that embracing growth and change that targets our vision is a sign of a healthy learning community.
In order to prepare our students for an environment that is constantly evolving, a rigorous program that’s enriched with 21st Century Skills will give students the skills to be future leaders.
Our rigorous program is most effective when teachers facilitate collaborative student learning through a wide variety of media-rich, interactive, and authentic learning experiences.
